What is a root canal?
A root canal is performed to save a tooth with an infected or inflamed pulp and to prevent the spread of infection. Pulp exists inside each tooth to provide nerves and nutrients. The pulp or nerve may become infected due to tooth decay, a crack, chip or from trauma to the tooth. These circumstances allow bacteria to enter the internal pulp and cause infection.
Root Infection Symptoms
The symptoms you may experience from a root infection include:
- Dull throbbing or continuous pain at the site of the tooth
- Swelling along the gum line
- Blister on the gum
- Tooth sensitivity to hot, cold and/ or sweet food and beverages
- Tooth movement
- Pressure-caused pain (such as from chewing).
The Root Canal Treatment Process
At Instant Cosmetic & Dental Surgery, your accomplished dentist will walk you through the root canal treatment process to ensure you know what to expect. The procedure involves removing the damaged or infected pulp and cleaning out the infected area. After the tooth has been thoroughly cleaned and it’s been ascertained that no trace of bacteria is left, the tooth’s root canal is then sealed up with a filling.
